Preparing for Your At Home Newborn Session
Wondering how to prepare for your at home newborn session? These are the exact tips I give my clients for what to expect & how to get the most out of their at home newborn session! While every photographer has a different approach, my goal is for you all to feel relaxed, comfortable and at ease. Read more about why I love doing at home newborn sessions here!
What should we wear?
I usually suggest wearing light neutrals – whites, khakis, etc. This allows for your baby’s tiny, delicate features to stand out. I would stay away from any bright colors, especially pink, reds, and greens, as the color will reflect onto the baby’s skin. Avoid logos, large graphics, and distracting patterns. I even suggest wearing polos & button downs that have no branding if possible. Be comfortable! Your session is about snuggling your baby, not fidgeting with difficult necklines, and definitely not scratchy fabrics.
Consider keeping baby’s outfit changes minimal as most babies don’t like to be changed! I suggest a plain white onesie look & a swaddle look. Check out my Pinterest board for inspiration! I’m also happy to consult with you personally about options. The goal is to feel comfortable & confident!
Do we have to clean the whole house?
Absolutely not! I have done an entire session in one room! Focus on your favorite rooms with the best natural lighting – Ideally 2-3 locations is plenty! Great spots for newborn sessions include the nursery, master bed and living room couch. If possible, just tidy up around those areas and you’ll be good to go, maybe throw on some fresh white bedding. Typically, when I arrive for an at home newborn session, my clients will show me around their home & we will talk about the best locations together. There’s no rush here, so definitely don’t stress about cleaning the whole house!
What if my baby is fussy?
You are more than welcome to feed & change your baby during your session. I shoot quickly when baby is happy just incase it is a small window of opportunity! This is also why there is such a large range in how long your shoot can last. At home newborn sessions can range from 45 minutes to 2 hours. The goal is to capture plenty of photos of baby with all of you together, each of you individually & baby on their own. This can also mean a little extra time if there are additional siblings to include!
What should we have prepared?
I don’t usually suggest using props, but if there is something you have in mind, let me know! I do ask that you have a boppy and a white swaddle blanket for me to use. If you want to include things like hair bows, I reccommend keeping them on the dainty side so they don’t distract too much from your baby’s face. You won’t see anything like baskets or delicate wraps in my portfolio, so don’t expect me to bring them to your shoot. I am for natural, lifestyle photography that captures the essence of your baby’s unique personality & features!
Can we include our dog?
Absolutely! I love when my clients include their pups – they are part of the family!
What time will we shoot?
Late morning is typically best, however, consider when your home has the most natural light!
Where should we shop?
Here are a few of my favorite places to shop for the whole family for your at home newborn session!
