This is a difficult time in our country and the world – but the truth is, for black people, it has always been difficult. I apologize that I have not done enough to make diversity, equity and inclusion a part of my mission. I have not done enough to acknowledge my white privilege and how it affects my world view. I have not done enough to speak to the racial injustices that are so steeped in our culture.
I am actively working on becoming anti-racist. I am digging into books like So You Want to Talk about Race by by Ijeoma Oluo and White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. We are donating to causes like Minnesota Freedom Fund and The Collective PAC. If you are a parent, I recommend checking out The Conscious Kid and their parenting/education resources. It is my responsibility as a community leader to stand up against racism, to stand up for justice. I will listen, learn and do better. Not just this week or this month, but forever. And I hope you’ll help me stay accountable. I have always wanted Meredith McKee Photography and Om Mama Co. to be a safe and welcoming space for everyone, but it is time to do more to make that a reality.

I am personally taking part in Whole Body Pregnancy’s Anti-Racism in Birth Work Patreon program and Rachel Cargle‘s 30 Days #DoTheWork course. Kevin and I are actively working towards incorporating more anti-racism work in our daily lives and family values. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I am determined to understand & learn more, to do & say more. I know I’ll never get it “right”, but I at least have to try.
