Rainy Autumn Wedding at Fremont Abbey

The local news had been preparing us for days for what could be the storm of the year – hurricane strength winds, excessive rain & a strong likelihood for mass power outages. Seattle doesn’t get impressive weather very often so everyone took it pretty seriously. I charged all of my batteries days in advance, turned off my computer incase of power surge & put a flashlight next to my bed. The morning of Kacey & Cole‘s wedding day arrived. It was blustery, for sure, but these two wouldn’t have even the remnants of a typhoon rain on their parade! Kacey calmly got ready in one of the dressing rooms at Fremont Abbey, a perfectly appropriate venue for their wedding day as they met doing theater together.  She slipped into her uniquely retro dress & shoes as her friends and families bustled about in the reception hall setting everything up. It was 8:45am.

Cole waited apprehensively, sheltered from the drizzly rain by the trees on the front patio. They shared a joyous first look & grabbed the custom umbrellas they had ordered as gifts for their guests.

Kacey & Cole didn’t shy away from adventuring through the rain & ducking under awnings – they were too consumed by their excitement. I told Cole he looked like a dapper hipster (a high compliment) and that got a pretty good laugh & nod in agreement. It was nearing 10am, so we headed back to the Abbey.

Kacey had spent months knitting flowers and poms for everything from the bouquets to the centerpieces. I loved how fall-y everything felt. A brunch wedding so cozily lends itself to warm colors & soft fabrics. Kacey & Cole hand drew on all of the mugs – unique to each guest. Mine had drawings of constellations on it and read “Love you to the moon and back!” They had a place setting for me next to Kacey’s mom – I felt so welcomed into their circle on this day & felt lucky to be the one capturing their celebration.

The clock struck 10:15am on 10/15 – Kacey & Cole walked each other down the isle & were surrounded by their family and friends. I loved the hand-cut leaves that served as the backdrop for the ceremony space.

Kacey & Cole decided to perform a handfasting ceremony – a Celtic tradition, literally “tying the knot” as part of their ceremony. It was so unique & beautiful!

As Seattle fall would have it, it was still raining after the ceremony, so we gathered up more umbrellas & walked down the street to Daybreak Records for a few bridal party photos (& record browsing).

Guests had their fill of coffee, mimosas & bloody marys, and amazing creole cuisine from Jemil’s Big Easy. They also had a biscotti & danish bar, as well as a desert bar filled with pies, bars & cakes. My favorite line from Cole was “If you leave this wedding hungry, you’re not doing it right.” I did not leave hungry, I’ll tell you that! I even brought some red beans & rice home for Kevin!

Kacey & Cole had choreographed their first dance to “You Are The Best Thing”  – that song gets me every time!!

The celebration wrapped up just before the “bad winds” were supposed to set in, but Seattle really did get the easy end of the stick with this storm. We never lost power, maybe one patio chair blew over. I am so happy I got to capture Kacey & Cole’s joy on their wedding day – even when the rain falls, your love shines through. Congratulations you two – I know you are having an amazing time soaking up all of that sunshine in Cancun – you earned it! Cheers to you!! xoxo
