Best Family Hikes with Kids Near Seattle

As a mom to a toddler, I’m always looking for ways to keep my little guy active and engaged while nurturing his curiosity. Seattle and its surrounding areas are blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, making it a perfect destination for family hikes (and family bonding). Spending time in the great outdoors also provides me with wonderful opportunities to create memories by capturing photos of my little adventurer.

From cascading waterfalls to breathtaking views, there’s something for everyone in the PNW. These are some of my fave hikes mixed in with some of my bucket list ones.

Franklin Falls:

Located near Snoqualmie Pass, Franklin Falls is a family-friendly hike that will captivate both young and old. This 2-mile round-trip trail takes you through lush forests, meandering alongside the South Fork Snoqualmie River. The reward at the end is a magnificent 70-foot waterfall plunging into a tranquil pool. Pack a picnic and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature in this enchanting setting.

Rattlesnake Ledge:

For an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding mountains and Rattlesnake Lake, head to Rattlesnake Ledge. Located in North Bend, this moderately easy hike is suitable for older children. The well-maintained trail winds its way through the forest, gradually ascending to a breathtaking viewpoint. It’s a perfect spot to take family photos and create lasting memories.

Wallace Falls:

Just an hour northeast of Seattle, Wallace Falls State Park offers a variety of trails, with the Lower Falls Trail being an excellent choice for families. This trail is relatively flat and takes you through moss-covered trees and alongside the South Fork Wallace River. The reward is a majestic 265-foot waterfall split into three tiers, providing a mesmerizing sight for young explorers.

Tiger Mountain:

Tiger Mountain State Forest, near Issaquah, offers a range of trails suitable for families. One notable hike is the Talus Rocks Loop Trail. This moderate trail leads you through a lush forest, dotted with boulders covered in vibrant green moss. Kids will love exploring the unique rock formations and soaking in the serene surroundings.

St. Edwards State Park:

Located in Kenmore, St. Edwards State Park provides a tranquil retreat with a range of family-friendly trails. The Beach Trail is an easy stroll that leads to the picturesque Lake Washington. Take a break by the water, have a picnic, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake.

Mount Si:

Although a more challenging hike, Mount Si near North Bend is worth the effort for families with older children. The steep trail rewards hikers with sweeping panoramic views from the summit. On a clear day, you can see the surrounding mountains and even catch a glimpse of Seattle in the distance.

Grand Ridge Trail Park:

Situated near Issaquah, the Grand Ridge Trail Park offers a network of trails suitable for families of all ages. The trails wind through the forest, offering glimpses of wildflowers and wildlife. With varying lengths and difficulty levels, you can choose a route that best suits your family’s hiking abilities.

Cold Creek Falls:

Nestled in the Snoqualmie Pass area, Cold Creek Falls is a hidden gem that offers a short, family-friendly hike. The trail leads you through a picturesque forest, culminating in a beautiful waterfall cascading into a small pool. The serene ambiance and tranquil surroundings make it a perfect escape for families seeking a peaceful outing.

Cowan Park:

Located in Ravenna, Cowan Park offers a delightful urban hiking experience for families. The trails wind through wooded areas, offering a serene escape within the city. Follow the trails that meander alongside Ravenna Creek, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and the sounds of nature. Kids can explore the lush surroundings, play in open spaces, and even have a picnic in the park. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourselves in nature without venturing too far from the city.

Discovery Park:

Situated within Seattle, Discovery Park is a true urban oasis. It offers several easy trails that are ideal for families. The Loop Trail, a popular choice, takes you through diverse ecosystems, including forests, meadows, and breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Kids can enjoy spotting wildlife, playing on the sandy beach, or exploring the historic lighthouse.

So lace up your hiking boots, pack your sense of adventure, and embark on memorable journeys surrounded by the beauty of nature with your loved ones. I’ll see you on the trails, happy hiking!
