Summer Wardrobe Guide: Styling Tips

Capturing the essence of summer through vibrant and joyful photographs is a delightful experience that I love. I strongly believe one of the key aspects that can elevate your family portraits is the wardrobe. Choosing the right outfits for your photo session can make a significant difference in the overall look and feel of the images. In this summer wardrobe guide, we’ll explore styling tips to help you create stunning and memorable family photos.

Embrace Light and Airy Fabrics:

Summer calls for breathable fabrics that keep you comfortable in the heat. Opt for lightweight materials such as linen, cotton, or chambray for a relaxed and effortless look. These fabrics allow for movement and create a sense of summer ease.

Coordinate Colors, but Avoid Being Matchy-Matchy:

This is a tip I recommend for all seasons! While coordinating colors among family members can create a cohesive look, it’s essential to strike a balance between coordination and individuality. Choose a color palette that complements each other without being overly matchy. For example, selecting a few complementary colors and incorporating them into various outfits can create a visually pleasing effect.

Incorporate Summer Patterns and Prints:

Summer is the perfect time to experiment with playful patterns and prints. Embrace floral prints, stripes, polka dots, or gingham for a touch of summer charm. Patterns add visual interest and can make the photos feel lively and cheerful. Just don’t overdo it 😉

Opt for Pastel and Bright Hues:

Summer is synonymous with vibrant colors. Pastels and bright hues not only reflect the spirit of the season but also make for visually appealing photographs. Shades like coral, mint green, sky blue, or sunny yellow will complement the light and infuse your photos with a cheerful atmosphere.

Did someone say “Shoes”?:

Choosing the right footwear is just as important as selecting the outfits. Opt for comfortable yet stylish shoes that complement your chosen attire and the overall theme of the photoshoot. For outdoor summer shoots, sandals, espadrilles, or canvas sneakers can be excellent choices. These options not only provide a relaxed and casual look but also allow for easy movement and comfort. Ultimately, the right footwear completes the overall look and ensures that you are not only fashionable but also at ease during your summer session.

Consider the Location:

When selecting outfits, it’s important to take the location into account. If the shoot is at the beach, recommend airy dresses, shorts, or light-colored linen shirts. For a picnic in a meadow, suggest flowy skirts or casual summer dresses. By aligning the wardrobe with the setting, you can enhance the overall aesthetic and story of the images.

Dress for Comfort and Mobility:

Choose outfits that not only look good but also allow for comfort and mobility. This is especially important for families with young children. Avoid outfits that are too tight or restrictive, as they can make you feel uncomfortable and hinder natural movement.

Incorporating these summer wardrobe styling tips into your family photography session will not only enhance the visual appeal of your images but also create a cohesive and memorable collection of photographs. Remember, the key is to strike a balance between coordinating outfits and allowing each family member’s personality to shine through.
